Blending my love for the Harry Potter series with my love for knitting, I’ve designed four knit hats representing each of the Hogwarts houses. These free Harry Potter knitting patterns are available for any crafter who’d love to rep Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin in the real world.

Animals are my favorite fair isle hat designs, so naturally, I was inspired by the symbols of each House. If you’d like a brush up on the basics of fair isle knitting in the round before you get started with one of these patterns, check out my guide on the technique!

Check out the Harry Potter knitting patterns I’ve made below:

Hufflepuff Knit Hat Pattern

Full disclosure: Hufflepuff is my House. And I’m proud of it. But I wasn’t sure about my ability to pull off a badger, which is a little harder to properly showcase in knit form. In the end, I’m really happy with the adorable badger face in my knit chart:

The Hufflepuff hat will require worsted weight yarn in black and yellow. While the added stars and symbols reduce the need to carry too much yarn, watch out for places to float your stitches when doing colorwork.

The final result is a warm, soft hat that screams Hufflepuff House, yet is cute enough in its own right, too. Don’t want to knit the hat yourself? Buy one from Holly G Hats!

Gryffindor Knit Hat Pattern

Gryffindors are bold and brave, so my knit hat pattern features three gold lions against a strong red background. If it looks familiar, you may notice that I’ve reused this chart from my Lannister hat in my Game of Thrones knitting series. It’s all about resourcefulness.

To knit this Gryffindor hat pattern, you’ll need worsted weight yarn in red and gold. Though I don’t quite have the raw courage to be part of this house, I’ll admit it’s one of my favorite designs in my Harry Potter knitting patterns.

Ravenclaw Knit Hat Pattern

Wit beyond treasure is man’s greatest treasure, but a warm, soft Ravenclaw hat can come pretty close. This blue and bronze hat is designed to show three ravens in flight against a bronze plaque. It’s a royal look worthy of the cleverest House.

Ravenclaw Knit Hat

Knitting the Ravenclaw hat requires worsted weight yarn in deep blue and bronze. I had trouble finding yarn in just the right shade, so my picture shows a more golden color. If you find a great bronze-colored yarn, let me know in the comments!

Slytherin Knit Hat Pattern

Fight against Slytherin’s bad rap with a lovely, warm hat that showcases Slytherin snakes in a softer light. I adored making this design, charting three vertical snakes against an emerald green background.

You’ll need emerald green and silver worsted weight yarn to pull off this pattern. I believe in Slytherin’s redemption, so I hope I put enough clever design into this chart to do the House justice.

In the Gryffindor Knit Hat Pattern, for the body, it says to work the chart. The brim has been k1p1. However, the body looks different. Are all the body stitches knit stitches when working in the round?

Hi Elizabeth! Yes, all stitches are knit when the body is worked!

These patterns are great! Do you happen to have a princess hat?

…I just knitted a swatch and my gauge is small. 😳 I guess I should have done that before I started! Oh well, I get to make another one! 😂

Ah, the knitter’s curse. I’m always tempted to skip the gauge too! XD

One good fix is to up the needle size and see how that works, but you can also add a couple stitches to the pattern — for example, add 2 stitches to each chart row (repeats 3 times) to reach 96 stitches total. It won’t affect the design, but you’ll want to start decreasing with 10 stitches, SSK and so on rather than starting at 8 🙂

Hi, I love these patterns! This is my first time making a fair isle pattern, and my finished hufflepuff hat is too small for myself or my kids. 😂 It’s still really cute and was fun to make. My 2 oldest kids and I are Hufflepuff based on our pottermore results. 😊) My floats seem fine, as in they aren’t tight, but I’m wondering what I did wrong. I used US 7 dpns. Did I use the wrong size of needle?

Are these patterns for children sizes? Do you have adult sizes? I love them!

    • Reply Holly October 14, 2019 at 8:46 pm

Hi Jeremy — awesome, I’m so glad you like them! These are currently all sized for adults 🙂

I love these, ESPECIALLY the badger! If I’m making them for kids, 8-10 would you recommend the same needle? Or smaller?

        • Reply Holly October 22, 2019 at 10:32 pm

Hi Sarah! Hmm, I think a smaller needle may work (maybe 5-6) if you want a slighter smaller fit. It’s hard to say exactly how the fit will come out, but if you want to do it mathematically, you can knit a gauge with the smaller needle and divide the total number of stitches (90) by your gauge. That number will equal the approximate head circumference the hats will fit 🙂

Of course, you may need to whip out a tape measure and measure the kids’ head!

Cascade Yarns has a close bronze but the Ravenclaw emblem is an eagle not a raven. Check The Hogwarts shield and it is plainly an eagle.

Thank you for making these cute hat patterns available for free. I make hats for kids at the school my daughter teaches at, that is in “the projects” I want to make hats that the kids will like – and since she reads Harry Potter to them, these will all be perfect for them – and warm too!

For Rsvenclaw you can also use silver gray to replace the bronze. That’s the volor us a d with blue in the movies.

    • Reply Holly August 11, 2019 at 11:10 am

Ahh, thanks Joanne! I think I’d prefer it in silver for sure!

Hufflepuff forever! Love these. Any chance they’ll be posted on Ravelry as well?

Do you have particular colors that you recommend for the Harry Potter hats that you shared? Can’t wait to do them for my grandkids…

    • Reply Holly July 12, 2019 at 9:16 am

      Hi Margi!

Gryffindor: Scarlet would be closest to the books, but a deeper red can look really nice. I’d use a gold yarn for the lion.
Slytherin: I used hunter green for the example pictures, but “emerald” is the official House color. I think it stood out nicely against the gray.
Hufflepuff: I found a pale yellow yarn to go with the black. Some yellows can be really bright, and I wanted this hat to be a little softer.
Ravenclaw: The example picture is a deep blue (almost navy) and gold. In the books, you’re supposed to use bronze, but I couldn’t find a yarn that got the right shade in between gold and brown.

Thank you so much! My roommate is a big Hufflepuff fan and one of your hats will make a wonderful gift for her.

Aww great! Glad more proud Hufflepuffs will get to enjoy this!
