Spring has always been my favorite season. The sun starts to come out again, my rush of hat orders has waned, and for the last few years at least, Game of Thrones has been on the air. Given the HBO series’ final season, I decided it was time to dive into some Game of Thrones knitting patterns.

I’ve been deep into the world of Westeros since high school, when my friend lent me the A Song of Ice and Fire series and I tore through the pages as fast as I could. Since then, I’ve done a reread and spent many years bumming off of anyone who had an HBO subscription to keep up with the TV adaptation. (This year, I’m a big girl and shelled out for my own).

Spring is my favorite time to come up with creative new ideas, and I’m pumped to share my GOT-inspired ones. I’ve come up with four free Game of Thrones knitting patterns reflecting four of the Great Houses of Westeros: the Starks, the Lannisters, the Baratheons, and the Targaryens.

Below, I’ll post some pictures, talk about my process, and share my patterns!

1. House Stark: Direwolf Knit Hat

The Starks are our first entry into Westeros, so it’s no surprise that they’re almost everyone’s favorite house. If you admire Ned Stark’s honor, stuck with Sansa as she exhibited strength in the worst situations, and are fascinated by whatever Bran’s up to beyond the Wall, this one’s for you.

I can’t take total creative credit for the direwolf design, as I hunted around Pinterest looking for ideas on how to model a wolf in a knitting chart. After some tinkering, I came up with an adorable, mid-stride direwolf that looks like it’s happily chasing after one of the little Starks.

Note that in my updated knitting chart, I’ve added some extra flourishes in order to reduce the amount of floats required to tackle this pattern.

2. House Baratheon: Stag Knit Hat

The Baratheons are an interesting bunch; the three brothers aren’t exactly what you’d call close. Still, Robert, Renly and Stannis have all given us reason to cheer. Since there are so many Baratheon boys to root for, I hope I’ve done all fans justice with this hat.

I chose a more golden yellow for the background color here, since I’m not a fan of vivid yellow. But the Baratheon’s signature yellow and black is reflected here, with a parade of black stallions leaping across the field.

Deer are a classic fair isle technique, so making this chart was the easiest of the bunch. I added some flair for visual interest — and to avoid having to carry my yellow yarn strand in every row. Sue me.

3. House Lannister: Lion Knit Hat

The Lannisters: sure, they’re fairly controversial. Although they have plenty of bad eggs, however, you’ll also find plenty of Lannisters to root for. And hey, they always pay their debts. I wanted to design a hat with the rich, proud look that Lannisters are always going for.

I’m honestly in love with this lion design. What’s nice about it is that it’s ideal for both House Lannister and Gryffindor, meaning this hat can do double duty for fans of either series. The lion stands tall, and the rich red & gold really make for something striking.

4. House Targaryen: Dragon Knit Hat

Last but certainly not least in my Game of Thrones knitting lineup comes the Targaryen hat. The number of Targaryen claimants to the Iron Throne is getting shockingly high in both the books and the show, but no matter who you’re rooting for (is anyone really pro-Aegon?), I designed a hat to show off your not-so-secret allegiance.

I decided that creating a knit chart for a three-headed dragon would be a little much. Instead, I found some knitting chart inspiration on Pinterest and built out a design that features three red dragons on a jet black field. I love the fierce look of scarlet and black — it really does scream “Vengeance. Justice. Fire and blood.”

I had so much fun knitting these hats over the past couple of weeks. Not only did I get to express my appreciation for A Song of Ice and Fire, but I got to stretch my creative muscles and come up with some cool knitting charts that I used in my Harry Potter knitting series.

I hope you guys enjoy the end of the series, that the next book comes out in the foreseeable future, and that your favorite House isn’t decimated in the wars to come. In the meantime, I’ll be knitting my anxiety away as I watch the last two episodes.
