Christmas Knit Hat Pattern With a New Holiday Chart

Thanksgiving is practically here, so I thought it was about time I released my new Christmas knit hat pattern for everyone to tackle before the holiday season gets underway. This holiday knitting pattern is now available for purchase and should inject a little seasonal spirit into even the coldest winter.

I designed a Christmas chart last year, but it needed some improvement. I’m much happier with this one, which features presents, Christmas trees and candy cane stripes knit in red, green, and white. It’s super adaptable and I’ve preemptively included both adult and child sizes in my pattern PDF.

The Holiday Knit Hat

I absolutely adore this hat. While I’m one of those people who refuses to celebrate Christmas until my pumpkin pie plate is cleared post-Thanksgiving dinner, I’m more than ready to wear this out in the cold Upstate NY weather on Friday.

I designed this with the same approach I took with my Halloween hat pattern, which is available for free. I wanted a fair isle design that was just a little bit zany, but cute and festive.

While I knit it in red, green, and white, I think there’s a lot of potential to play with color here. Icy blues and whites can give this a different holiday palette. Or, you could sub gold in for white to get another classic Christmas color in.

What the Christmas Hat Pattern Includes

I regularly get requests for child-sized hat patterns, so I’ve written instructions for both an adult hat (22 in. circumference) and a child hat (20 in. circumference). The chart is adjusted too, so every step will be taken care of for you!

You also get:

  • Adaptable brim instructions (for those who like a long, foldable brim)
  • Both written and chart instructions for the decrease section, in case one is easier for you to follow over the other

Skills and Materials Required

Like all of my hats, colorwork is required here. I think this one should be fairly approachable for those newer to colorwork, but you can also check out my blog post on the technique to get an idea of whether you’re up for it.

Materials:

  • Round needles or DPNs, side US 5-7 or 4-5 mm
  • Three skeins of worsted weight yarn, approximately 150 yards for green and red and 75 yards for white (probably less, but I overestimate to be safe)
  • Yarn needle or crochet hook for finishing

Skills:

  • SSK or knit2tog: I personally use SSK, but either stitch works
  • Colorwork
  • Knitting in the round
  • m1
